NATURE CLUB REPORT

   Nature club functions with the aim to conserve our nature through our thoughts and deeds.  Eighty-eight students are members of the club. Dr. Elizabeth John, Assistant Professor in Zoology, and Dr. Jisha R. functioned as the coordinators. The club members include students from various departments of the college. Student office bearers were selected in a meeting held on 6th June 2019. In this meeting, Miss Regina A (III DC Zoology) was elected as the Secretary and Miss Shamnas S (II DC Zoology) as the joint secretary. The report of activities conducted during the period is given below.

World Environment Day Celebration      

  The activities of the academic year 2019 – ’20 started on June 6th by celebrating World Environment Day. Students planted host plants of butterfly in the butterfly garden of the Zoology Department. They planted Lentanum, hibiscus, Jasmine, Pagoda plant, Fire lily Ixora, Cape jasmine, etc. From this day onwards the club members during their leisure time made a survey of butterflies visiting the garden. Eighteen species were identified and recorded.

 

   On September 16 we observed World Ozone Day. The theme of the year “32 years and healing” was discussed among the members during the occasion. New suggestions were put forward to protect our nature from harmful radiation.

   World Soil Day was observed on 5th December 2019. The class was taken by Shamnas S. II year Zoology highlighting the importance of soil and conservation. She narrated the history of holiday celebrations, their importance, soil erosion, soil pollution, and at last the methods to conserve soil and prevention of soil erosion. Dr. Elizabeth John emphasized the importance of planting Ramacham – Vetiver for preventing soil erosion.

 


    The club members visited the Thenmala ecotourism center on January 27th for bird watching and observed 33 species of birds from Lookout the region, deer park, and dam area. It was rather an overwhelming experience for the members.

 


     The official inauguration of the club was conducted on 3rd February, 2020 in the Zoology Laboratory. Dr. Biju A, Assistant Professor, St. Stephens College, Pathanapuram inaugurated the function and made a class on “ Wetland and its conservation” . Dr. Suman Alexander, the Principal of the college presided over the function. Dr. Elizabeth John welcomed the gathering and Dr. Jisha R, Assistant professor in Chemistry and Dr. Rani S. Dharan (HOD, Department of Zoology) made felicitation.  Ananya V of III DC Zoology recited poems on nature. The students of the club published their survey of butterflies in the Butterfly garden during the occasion.            

    Rain Calendar – The students prepared the rain calendar for a year by noting down the date in which rain is received in their locality and how long it rained and the different patterns of rain observed.

    The experience students gained during the period helped them to create a love towards nature and foster their activities to protect our nature.  All the club members actively participated in the activities mentioned above. I thank all the club members and authorities of the college for the successful completion of the activities during the period.
