The Department of Commerce, one of the earliest in the college, was established in 1964. The department inaugurated its UG programme in 1979 and PG programme in 2013. With a student strength of around three hundred and sixty, the department is recognized as the largest one in the college. Over the years, the department has cultivated an outstanding academic record, as evinced by the generations of meritorious students it has trained, including a number of University rank holders. A great asset of the department is its extensive alumni network, comprising many who have risen to eminent positions in various public and private sector enterprises across the globe. Each year, the Commerce Association organizes a number of events designed to promote the academic and cultural interests of its student body. Some significant annual events spearheaded by the Association include the Luca Pacioli Inter-departmental Quiz Competition, career guidance seminars to educate students on higher education and employment opportunities, Entrepreneurship Development seminars to stimulate interest in entrepreneurship, etc. Another impressive initiative of the Association is the annual intra-collegiate Commerce and Management fest which includes several game shows, quizzes, and other contests. The presentation of the Alen Johnson Sony Memorial Ever-Rolling Trophy to the victors of this fest has become a cherished yearly tradition.

The department has thirteen faculty members, of whom two are Ph.D. holders.
